How did you develop your speaking skills?
I realized that I could not advance in my career if I was afraid to speak in meetings and in front of audiences. I learned how by watching others and taking courses or seminars in speaking and presenting. Soon I was doing presentations across the country. (When the planes were crashing into the World Trade Center on 9/11, I was on stage in Halifax.)
I wanted to get better, more like TED speaker. I got invited to speak at CALU 2011, where previous speakers included professionals (e.g., Mitch Joel, Robert Cialdini), politicians (Prime Ministers, opposition leaders) and billionaires (e.g., Ted Rogers, a Canadian Ted Turner). I joined Goodyear Toastmasters in December 2010 to hone my skills and help others. I got elected club President 2011-2012. I got appointed Area Governor 2013-2014 to help six clubs.
The result is that I've been invited to speak to many groups, primarily about trust, marketing or risk.
